Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

On my bucketful list this year (and survive) was to take the kids out to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park during wildflower season, which is in general between April and May.  Regrettably I missed it last yr, information technology's tough trying to coordinate schedules with wildflowers, they don't tend to tell you when they are going to bloom of youth, especially in the quantities that one sees in photographs from that area, which is really rather annoying.  So, we distinct to just strain our portio during Archaeology Weekend.

Unfortunately there hasn't been a great deal of rainwater this season so there weren't masses of flowers just mendicancy to be photographed, but we did manage to come across a few wildflowers, particularly on our 3 mile hike.

In that respect are a number of hikes you can take throughout Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and the visitor's center is a wealth of information.  We were supposed to take a target-hunting hike to Pearl Bailey Cabin in the Hawi-Vallecito Cultural Conserves, still it was cancelled ascribable the guide existence ill.  So, while the kids made coggle and anvil clayware outer, I popped into the visitant center to chat to a volunteer WHO gave ME data and maps for a couple of great hikes that kids would lie with.

The hike we decreed on was the Borrego Decoration Canyon Nature Trail which is approximately a 3 mile globular trip.

Before I share photographs and more information about the hike, I desire to share a few photographs of the pottery, which was a special hands-on plan for Archaeology Weekend.

Straightaway, onto the hike.

The terminus a quo for the cost increase is located a short distance from the visitor's center at the back of the Borrego Palm Canyon Camping ground.  You can walk there, but with the heat, I decided it was better to pay the day-employment fee at the bivouac and stick to our 3 Swedish mile plan instead of adding few extra miles on and hazard the kids being exhausted.

Present is the correspondenc of where we hiked:

For the first mile (OR .96 to Be axact), it was jump and hot and in that respect were quite an very much of people on the chase away.  The kids did see birds and lizards which unbroken them somewhat occupied, but there were not a lot of wildflowers.  However, once you get to that compass point in the raise, you derive upon a backlog bridge running over a narrow creek.  From that spot, and for the future half a mile, information technology's a lovely hike. Either side of the Creek in the canyon is green, there are wildflowers, a small waterfall, butterflies, dragonflies, birds, the kids spotted frogs and tadpoles in the creek, they played with a ladybird beetle, and we tainted Peninsular Bighorn Sheep. The turn-around point of the hike is when you reach an oasis of palm trees.  They provided much requisite tint where we were able to sit up along rocks with a brilliant view, enjoy snacks in front drift back along the trail again.

Even though my kids have hiked up to 7 miles during some of our preceding weekend hikes, they were pretty exhausted after this trip, mainly attributable the heat.  Make positive you take flock of water and snacks.

What you will need:

  • 2-3 piss bottles per person (we also took a few Gatorade bottles too)
  • Snacks
  • Medical kit up
  • Hats
  • Sunglasses
  • Long pants (these protect the kids legs when they are climbing over rocks)
  • Photographic camera (course)

There are bathrooms at the visitant center, and I spotted a sign in to much at the very beginning of the trail, but in that location are no longer on the trail.
